ZERON 100 and
AL-6XN Alloy

Rolled Alloys supplies ZERON 100 and AL-6XN into the most aggressive downhole, topside and subsea environments. ZERON 100 was specifically engineered to withstand the extreme temperatures, pressures and sour service that exist in the North Sea. With NORSOK approval ZERON 100 has been used successfully for pumps, tooling, and piping systems. Both AL-6XN and ZERON 100 have been utilized for entire piping systems, tubulars, tooling and topside platforms at B.P., Shell, Marathon Oil, and Exxon Mobil.
Topside Applications

Offshore oil rigs must maintain structural integrity and limit corrosion in a wide variety of seawater applications. Duplex stainless steels and high nickel-molybdenum alloys are used in place of austenitic stainless steels, which are prone to general pitting, stress cracking, and have limited strength.

Flare tips and other high temperature applications utilize alloys, such as RA330, 253 MA, and 310 stainless steel. Both RA330 and RA 253 MA provide oxidation resistance up to 2000°F. 800H/AT and 625 are equally common.

ZERON 100 super duplex and 2205 duplex are used in offshore oil rigs, pressure vessels and cyclones. ZERON 100, for example, has been used in seawater fire protection systems by Marathon Oil, Mobil, B.P., Shell and many others.

AL-6XN displays outstanding resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, and has been implemented in LNG vaporizers and fire protection systems, as well as a variety of other offshore Oil and Gas production equipment.

625 has good stress rupture strength up to 1800°F, resists oxidation and has excellent resistance to chloride-ion SCC and crevice corrosion. Applications include marine and chemical processing environments, in forms such as seals, fasteners, heat exchangers, valves, steam lines, and exhaust ducts.

A Christmas tree structure is a common form of well head application. 718 (NACE Compliant) makes particularly useful oil tools and shafts due to its high strength and corrosion resistance, excellent sub zero toughness and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.
Downhole Applications

The reduced amount of easily available crude oil has increased the demand of oil extraction, creating a need for deeper wells with more severe conditions. The downhole portion includes the use of alloy 718, 17-4, 13-8, Nitronic 50 (XM-19), Nitronic 60 stainless steels and ZERON 100 super duplex stainless steel.

718 is stocked in both an annealed form to meet AMS 5662 as well as a specific aging treatment to meet the higher mechanical properties required by API 6A and hardness limitations from NACE MR-0175.

17-4 stainless steel (solution treated and aged) is the preferred alloy for stems, and shafts, and is often used in valve internals. It has high strength and corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel in many environments.
